Job Market Resources
Here are samples of the materials I prepared for the philosophy job market in 2021-2022:
Here are some additional materials I prepared for my flyouts:
Here are resources I found helpful when I was on the market:
- Cover letter (research university)
- Here is the ad I was responding to (I recommend saving ads so you can review them before your interviews!)
- Cover letter (liberal arts college)
- Here is the ad I was responding to
- CV and dissertation abstract (this is the CV I used on the market, not my current CV)
- Writing sample
- Research statement
- Teaching portfolio
- Diversity statement
Here are some additional materials I prepared for my flyouts:
- Secondary writing sample (for my W&L flyout, I was asked to provide a new paper for faculty to pre-read then discuss, rather than give a research talk)
- Teaching demonstration handout
- Job talk slides, handout, and script (I recommend trying out the idea of writing a script (I do this for almost all my talks). I practiced my job talk twice, once unscripted and once scripted, and the scripted one was miles better)
- Handout on research plans
Here are resources I found helpful when I was on the market:
- Dan Korman's advice for the job market
- Phil Cocoon job market bootcamp
- Zoë Johnson King's job market materials, available on the front page of her website.
- Elise Woodard's compilation of possible interview questions (ask her for the file! It's amazing.)
- Phil Cocoon job market reporting thread (the Grad Cafe of the job market – beware if you're the anxious type!)
- I didn't do the Phil Cocoon job market mentoring program, but I heard good things about it.
